News May 2018
We new have an additional base for sailing experiences at Deganwy Quay Marina North Wales. We have a 33 foot steel cutter Whimbrels Song located there, which offers a little more space and greater flexibility on river sailing times and durations. Operations from this location are planned to start in late July 2018 – experience itineraries can be found below.
We offer two types of experiences – Marina and on the River – from Liverpool and Deganwy. We can take groups up to 3 people (Liverpool) or 4 people (Deganwy). Minors 10 – 14 years of age and vulnerable adults MUST be accompanied by a parent, guardian or other chaperone. Anyone under 18 years of age requires parental or guardian consent to participate in a sailing experience. All participants will be required to sign a good conduct undertaking. Details of both will be supplied upon application. Guillemot Trust reserves the right to withdraw an offer of or curtail an experience to an individual it deems to be unsuitable to undertake the activity.
Clients should arrive at the marina at the appointed time, as any lateness ‘eats into’ the experience time – the return to the berth cannot be extended in the event of a late arrival.
Marina experiences are very much suited to anyone who might have a fear of the open river and the blustery conditions out there, or who just feel they want a gentle introduction to being on the water. Generally we spend two hours or so cruising around the marina, to give some experience in basic boat handing. We usually do a man-overboard drill and if the conditions are right we use our special dispensation at Liverpool marina to hoist the foresail so that you get some experience of sailing under wind power.
For river experiences (single tide Liverpool), we exit the marina via Brunswick lock and sail out on the Mersey’s incoming tide. Depending upon the wind conditions we sail using just the foresail or with foresail and mainsail. Depending upon your tolerance of ‘excitement’ you might find your self criss-crossing the river at racing speeds under a 35 degree list or otherwise quietly bobbing along on the slackening incoming tide. You then return to the marina via the lock just before high tide. The experience should be complete about 30 minutes after returning to the marina (not later than high tide). Liverpool river experiences are about 3-4 hours.
For river experiences (single tide Deganwy) we exit the marina via the tidal gate and sail out on the Conwy’s incoming tide. Depending on weather conditions, we might venture out to sea. You then return to the marina via the tidal gate around 3 hours after high tide. The experience should be complete about 30 minutes after returning to the marina. Deganwy river experiences can be up to 7 hours.
Two-Tide river experiences, are also available for those who have previous of sailing and are looking for something a little more adventurous. These are long days out on the River Mersey estuary, sailing up to New Brighton and possibly further depending on prevailing conditions. The experience goes on out the morning tide and returns on the evening tide, offering between 9 and 10-and-a-half hours out on the river depending on tide height. Consequently there are not that many days in a year on which these events can be offered. These are usually a very early morning start with no means of an early return to the marina, so remember to bring a hearty packed lunch and hot / cold drinks to last the full day.
Note: Late arrival for a two-tide experience will mean that the whole day is cancelled, as these are scheduled to catch the last lock slot on the morning tide.
Book a marina experience
These can be run at nearly any time, please just contact the coordinator with your ideal date and time.
Book a river experience
Date and time are completely dictated by the tide, sunrise, sunset and the weather. River experiences are only available on those days where high water(s) occurs within our operating protocols. River experiences are subject to cancellation at short notice if weather conditions are unsuitable; in some circumstances an in-marina experience might be offered instead. The calendar below lists viable dates for a river experience: Liverpool experience times are not variable; Deganwy times indicate the maximum duration of an experience – this can be tailored to suit your needs when booking.
If you want to enquire about booking one of these dates, please send an email to the coordinator, referencing the trip number (R-yyddmmP or T-yyddmmP) where P referes to the port: L=Liverpool and D=Deganwy. Open the event and click “Read more” for full details of the activity times and location.
